Community study of urinary pH and osmolality.

چکیده
In a previous communication (Asscher, Sussman, Waters, Davis, and Chick, 1966), it was shown that urine obtained from females supports the growth of E. coli, the commonest urinary pathogen, better than that from males. This difference was dependent on a sex difference in urinary pH and osmolality, the urines of females being significantly more often at suitable pH and osmolality for the growth of E. coli than those of males. This paper describes the detailed results of the community study which led us to conclude that a sex difference in urinary pH and osmolality exists.

Quantification of Proteinuria with Urinary Protein to Osmolality Ratios in Children
Background: The ratio of urine protein to urine osmolality has recently been suggested as an accurate method to determine proteinuria. Objective: We studied the correlation of urine protein to urine osmolality ratio with 24-hr urinary protein excretion. Methods: 150 children aged 0.11–17 years admitted to the Department of Pediatric Nephrology were included in this study. Early morning urine s...
متن کاملEffects of seminal plasma ionic content, pH and osmolality on spermatozoa motility in bester (Female Huso huso × Male Acipenser ruthenus) sturgeon
The ionic contents, pH and osmolality of seminal plasma and their relationships to sperm motility indices (sperm motility duration and percentage of motile sperm) were evaluated in bester. Semen was collected from six bester specimens and their seminal plasma was evaluated. The seminal plasma contained 54.5±2.8 mM sodium, 22.33±2.5 mM chloride, 7.1±1.2 mM potassium, 3.55±0.6 mM calcium and 0.58...

متن کاملEffect of lactose extender with different levels of osmolality and pH on the viability of Bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus) spermatozoa
The effect of different levels of osmolality and pH of lactose extender on the viability of Bactrian camelspermatozoa was investigated. Semen was collected from 10 Bactrian camel bulls using modified bovineartificial vagina. In experiment I, the extenders consisted of 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13% lactose with respectiveosmolalities of 290, 333, 350, 376 and 419 mOsm/kg and the pH of 6.9. In experiment...
متن کاملSpot urinary protein/osmolality ratio as a predictor for proteinuria of nephrotic range.
A prospective study was carried out on 50 patients (age 1-15 years) with nephrotic range of proteinuria to determine the correlation of 24-hour urinary total protein with spot urinary protein/creatinine ratio and urinary protein/osmolality ratio. Another 50 patients having no proteinuria grouped as control. Twenty-four hours urine and spot urine were collected from each child and were analyzed ...
